The St Regis Lijiang Residences -

This time for our latest project Limelight studio went to Lijiang, China for HBA where we shot the St Regis Lijiang Residences. Scott commented that this was one of our toughest projects in a while. We had to face a lot of unexpected problems along the way.

As usual our photographs always require an extremely high standard, but this time the bar was set even higher. For all the 12 shots we collaborated with an onsite interior designer. With each room we needed to rearrange every piece of furniture and decoration to suit accordingly. Everything that could be seen in the camera, needed to be discussed with the designer beforehand. Usually when we shoot interiors for hotels, we only need to do minor adjustments. But this time we needed to add and adjust nearly all pieces.

The first two shots came with a series of troubles. The second one was a serious one. On our second shot in a series of 12 we unfortunately had our camera knocked to the ground by a curtain. We saw it all happening but no one could reach the camera in time. It was like a   slow motion movie scene in full play. Scott took a deep breath and checked his beloved baby . The lens hood was smashed, the zoom ring was twisted, and the camera didn’t work. However we were extremely lucky as Scott restarted the camera it began to work. The lens itself was still functional.  Everyone felt a lot of relief. Being in the middle of China with no back up camera body or wide-angle lens we couldn’t imagine what would happen if the camera didn’t work.

There was anther accident happened during the first night of shooting. There were two fireplaces in different living rooms. Because those rooms are model room, so some of items weren’t fully functional, such as the fireplaces. The client hoped that they could see flames on the fireplace. When we tried to turn it on, the flame was unstable and inconsistent. We had to ask an engineer to pour alcohol manually into it. Since it wasn’t controllable we needed to take as many photos as we could for the flame. Sometimes the flame was only on the left side and sometimes it went to the other side of the fireplace. It didn’t make a perfect line on the fireplace, however when we got enough images we could put them all together in Photoshop.

Overall we had a lot of good luck. We overcame a lot of obstacles for these shots to happen. When we saw the final images we think it was well worth the problems. We hope you enjoy these images as much as we do.
